The Sundial, sculpted by M.Earl Cummings in 1905, was formerly located in front of the deYoung Museum along Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive. It has been temoprarily placed into storage until the new deYoung Museum is completed.
The memorial was erected to commemorate the first three navigators to the California coast: Fortuno Ximenes in 1534, Juan De Cabrillo in 1542, and Sir Francis Drake in 1579. The sculpture was a gift from the Colonial Dames of America. |
