Pioneer Mother Monument
Return to map

The monument celebrating Pioneer Mothers of California is located near the Pioneer Log Cabin on John F. Kennedy Drive, at the entrance to Stow Lake. It was created by Charles Grafly of New York in 1914. The statue appeared at the Panama-Pacific and Golden Gate International Exposition before being placed in the park permanently in 1940.

Many years of exposure had left the sculpture corroded and in poor repair. The Questers, a group that support preservation and restoration of historic sites, recently completed a restoration of the sculpture that has brought it back to it's previous glory.

A sailing ship and cow skulls adorn one side of the sculptures' base. Another side depicts a rising sun.
