Rainbow Falls
Return to map

Along John F. Kennedy Drive, opposite 20th Avenue, visitors will find Rainbow Falls. The falls cascades down from the base of Prayer Book Cross into a small catch basin, and from there, streams further west into Lloyd Lake. In the 1930's, colored lights were installed around the falls. Spray from the falls would create halo's of color giving rise to its name.

A close look at the surrounding red cliffs will reveal them to be rocks of the Franciscan formation that belong to the Jurassic period, more than a hundred million years old. Within these rocks can be found the radiolaria, the oldest fossils in the Bay Area.

To reach the source of the falls, walk up the path just east of the pond. At the top, visitors will discover the water bubbling out of a carin of rocks. The water is piped from a reservoir on nearby Strawberry hill.
