North Lake is located along Chain of Lakes Drive near 43rd Avenue and Fulton Street. Paved paths circumvent the lake offering easy hiking and viewing of the varied plantlife. The Restoration of the lake was completed in summer 2004, and is once again open to the public.
The Restoration
Most of the problems Rec and Park faced were due to the age of the lake. Originally constructed in 1898, the lake was showing its age. Water quality had degraded due to eutrophication and sedimentation. The clay liners were leaking, lake edges had been eroding and wildlife habitat was degrading.
To correct these problems, the lake was first drained to remove accumulated sediments. To improve water quality and circulation, it will be deepened. Also, the lake bottom will be relined with clay, and lake edges reconstructed to resist erosion. Finally, non-native invasive brush and some trees will be removed to improve wildlife habitat. |

| North Lake is said to mimic the great swamps of Florida. Visitors have been suprised to learn the swamp cypress, Taxodium distichium, exists outside of the Florida Everglades. It can be seen growing in several areas around this lake. The lake is a wonderful destination for family picnics. Reservations are required, and a fee is charged for groups of 25 or more. For more information and reservations, call 415-831-5500. |
