Music in the Park

Free Sunday concerts are performed by the Golden Gate Park Band during the summer months. Admission is free and donations are encouraged. The shell is located on the Music Concourse across from the deYoung Museum.

The Golden Gate Park Band is the oldest continuously operating municipal band in the United States.
Robert Hansen, known as "The Colonel", led the band each Sunday for the past 53 years. He joined the band in 1946 when he filled in for a trumpet player who wanted the July 4 holiday off. He missed only one performance since that time. Mr. Hanson died of pneumonia May 3, 2003. He was 85.

Many other festivities are celebrated at the band stand, including this Grateful Dead tribute held several summers ago.
