New visitors to the park are often startled when confronted with the parks' herd of Bison, located along John F. Kennedy Drive across from the Anglers Lodge. The first bison were bought by the Park Commision and brought to Golden Gate Park on February 13,1891. The current herd of 11 is descended from two cows named Sarah Bernhardt and Princess, and a bull named Ben Harrison.

At the time of their arrival, bison were close to extinction. By 1998, more than 100 calves had been born to the group in Golden Gate Park through the captive breeding program, and the total number of bison in North America exceeded 200,000.
